Mark and Sara's St. Aloysius Detroit, Michigan and
the Detroit Athletic Club Wedding
Mark and Sara got married on a windy and freezing day at the always beautiful St. Aloysius downtown Detroit. Wedding days always go quickly, but for some reason, their wedding seemed to fly by extra quickly. I loved that Mark and Sara really enjoy being in the moment and I think it's clear from the photos how connected they are and how much they enjoyed their wedding day.

I've photographed quite a few weddings at St. Aloysius downtown Detroit and while parking is always an adventure and arriving laden with photo equipment to step over homeless people sleeping in the barely protected doorways of the church is always precarious, I know that inside the church with its three tiers and old fashioned splendor, I will be able to create wonderfully dramatic photos despite it being a really challenging place to light. It's one of the few churches that literally drops into the basement so the altar where the ceremony is, is pushed close to the front. The church is very, very dark. I honestly don't know how photographers without off camera lighting can do anything to get decent photos in this church. Thank God for lighting know how… it's saved my hide many times, and this location demands it!
I've also photographed wedding receptions at the DAC or Detroit Athletic Club quite a few times over the years. The building has lots of places to photograph and works especially well for weddings where you are trying to avoid the weather. We didn't have much time at all to explore the interior for photos with Mark and Sara (we'd used up most of our time at Hart's Plaza downtown instead), but their emotion filled speeches and the raucous party and dancing certainly reflects the unity of the crowd at their wedding.
